Zimbabwe Explorations

May 10th 2018 to May 24th 2018

This trip will showcase the rich and diverse biodiversity of Zimbabwe, starting off in the South Eastern Lowveld and touching the eastern highlands en route to the magnificent Zambezi Valley at Mana Pools and then crossing the country via the Hwange to see the Matopo’s in all their majesty. This 14 day trip will cover 2500km and take us through 4 countries and 6 national parks.

  • Departure: Hoedspruit
  • Total cost: R 9 350
Fully inclusive of all border crossings, accommodation, park fees, booze and food. This excludes fuel which we will split.

Hoedspruit to Mockford Cottage

9:00am departure as we drive up via Giyani to Punda Maria gate and enter the Kruger National Park, our goal is to get into our unit at the Pafuri Border post with enough time to spend exploring the beauty of the Levhuvhu River for sundowners. We will watch the sunseting over Crookes corner before heading for camp.

  • Departure: 9:00am
  • Duration and distance: 304km ±5 hours

Pafuri to Southern Gonarazhou

11th May 2018

Early start today as we cross through the pafuri border post to make our way up the  Zimbabwe/Mozambique border to the border town of Shiqwalawala, this crossing is usually a fairly easy border and we will head all a fairly long and corrugated road to the Malapati Safari Area. Mabaluata will be our first night camping on the Nuanetsi River. It’s not a very long driving day but depending on the conditions on the Limpopo and the road north the going may be fairly slow.

Duration and distance: 120 km ±5 hours

Mabaluata to Hlaro Camp at Chilojo Cliffs

Fairly straight forward day of slow driving and game viewing en route to the Rundu Valley and the Chilojo cliffs, we will set up camp on the banks of the Rundu River and enjoy the tranquillity of Gonarazhou North. Depending on arrival time we can choose to spend some time driving around or just putting your feet up and chilling. Some interesting reading on Gonarazhou here.

Duration and distance: 130km ±5 hours

Hlaro Camp to Chivhu

Transfer day as we eat up the miles between Gonarazhou and Mana Pools

Chivhu to Chitake Springs

This is going to be a tough day in the vehicles as we head off early and drive through most of the day with the Zambezi Valley in our sites. The trip will take us through Harare and our goal will be Chitake Springs near the entrance gate. Chitake is the land of the giants as Elephant, Buffalo and Black Rhino move in to drink at one of the only sources of water in a nearly 70km radius. Action a plenty here and we will basically spend the next few days sitting watching the spring as game comes and goes.

Nyampeti and Old Ndunga

16th -20th May 2018

This is quintessential Mana, tall Anna trees, wide open spaces and the incredible life blood that is the Zambezi River. We will spend as much time as we can exploring this stunning landscape. Open camping gives one a true sense of immersion into the wilds as Hippo, Elephants and hyenas meander through the camp. Some interesting reading on Mana Pools here.

Old Ndunga to Sikumbi Forest Reserve

20th May 2018

Long day today as we will traverse 700km today. Skirting the majestic Kariba lake we will hug the Zambezi escarpment as we head for the edge of the Hwange National Park to Ganda Lodge for a bit of a break from Camping. Cold beers and a nice restaurant cooked dinner will be the order of the day here. Quick catch up on Wi-Fi will be welcome too.

Motopo’s National Park

21st -23rd May 2018

It has to be a pretty special place when a man who in his day had it all chooses to be buried here. Cecil John Rhodes who was seen as the architect of Colonial Africa is laid to rest here; he will be joined in fine company. We will once again avoid the tents for two nights and rest up in the beautiful Motobo Hills Lodge.

Pont drift border crossing

23rd May 2018

As we wind our way back through Plumbtree and Francistown we head back towards the start of our journey and the great Limpopo River. We will camp the evening close to the border and have a gentle drive back home to Hoedspurit on the 24th May. Exhausted but hopefully happy!
